Sharing Authentically

“I worry that this lack of honest accounts of overcoming adversity has created a Gilded Age of Failure”-Brené Brown.

As I read this quote, I’ve realized the difficulties of recovering from a traumatic brain injury or any intense injury are not spoken about enough. This quote has inspired me to share my story as a young woman recovering from a traumatic brain injury. I’ve only had one doctor tell me how truly difficult it is to recover from a brain injury while still trying to live my life; just one doctor told me this a month after the 3rd anniversary. My goal is to authentically and honestly share with you what it’s like to recover from a brain injury so you feel seen, understood, and supported. I am hoping you can learn from my mistakes as well as apply what has helped me. As a recent college graduate, I pictured a different future for myself, where I would be in my own place, running my own business that supported me financially, passed one of the four CPA exams, and confident to start my professional career as an assurance staff. I never imagined myself as a 23 year old who moved back in with her parents, hasn’t been able to study for the CPA exams, and would spend multiple days in a row in bed due to pain and exhaustion, only motivated to workout and coach for a few hours, eat, then go back to bed. The physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual journey of recovery is a lot, and I’m here to share my story so you feel heard, understood, and supported in your journey and if you know someone who is recovering, so you can learn more about the journey and support your loved one.
